What’s so special about RBs?

Haltech_RB15

Nissan’s RB engine has long been a favourite of tuners and car enthusiasts around the world.
But why? What makes this particular engine the favourite of so many?

Haltech_RB16

The story really starts with the modern-day GT-R. Nissan’s GT-R range is spoken of with near mythical reverence, ever since the R32 took the Japanese automotive market by storm when it was launched in August 1989. After 16-years without a GT-R model, Nissan re-launched the Skyline GT-R as a showcase for, what was at the time, the pinnacle of performance technology. The so-called R32 GT-R featured the new ATTESA all-wheel-drive system, all-wheel “Hicas” steering, and multi-link suspension front and rear.

Haltech_RB18

But for many, the highlight was the heart of the beast – the RB26DETT 2.6-liter turbocharged straight-6 motor. It spun out 276 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 60 mph took 5.6 seconds and the quarter mile passed in 13.9 seconds. Legend has it that chief engineer Shurei Ito didn’t reveal to anyone, including his own team members, that this car would wear the GT-R banner until right before its debut.

Haltech_RB23

The R32 race cars had great success in the FIA’s Group A series, both at home in Japan where the blue Calsonic-sponsored example has become iconic, and particularly in Australia where the Aussie press gave the Japanese fire-breathing monsters the nickname “Godzilla” for their dominance over the local Ford and Holden V8s. And with that, the legend was born.

Haltech_RB17

The R33 generation was mostly just an evolution of the R32. It was displayed at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show, but its official launch didn’t happen until January 1995.

Haltech_RB11

Under the hood resided an improved RB26DETT with torque increased to 264 lb.-ft. The R33 raced at Le Mans, taking 10th overall and 5th in class in 1995. The R33 is often mocked for its rounded “boat-like” countenance, but that hasn’t stopped it from gaining a strong and loyal following of its own. The limited- edition 400-bhp Nismo 400R is a particularly sought after example.

Haltech_RB19

The R34 would be the last GT-R to be powered by the RB26DETT. While horsepower was officially rated at 280 bhp, aftermarket tuners like HKS and Mine’s were cranking out versions with up to 800 bhp. Also, the R34 made a formidable race car, with the Pennzoil Nismo GT-R winning the Japanese Grand Touring Championship in 1999.

Haltech_RB20

The R34-generation of the GT-R benefitted from the racing and testing done for the two previous generations. It still made 276 horsepower, but turbo lag was reduced, it had more torque, and a new 6-speed manual replaced the 5-speed.

Haltech_RB13

The body was also stiffer, the aerodynamics were improved, and several weight-saving measures were employed, including the use of a carbon fiber rear diffuser. The car was also shorter, as was the front overhang. An R34 GT-R has been featured in several of the “Fast and Furious” movies, giving U.S. car enthusiasts a taste for unobtainable Japanese performance cars.

Haltech_RB04

However, the GT-R isn’t the only model to be blessed with RB Power. Much of the Skyline range from the R31 to R34 in both coupe and four-door body shape, whether RWD or AWD, also benefited from the RB engine, as did many less well known Nissan vehicles such as some Stageas, Laurels, Cefiros, and even the odd Patrol.

Haltech_RB21

Of course, we can’t write about the RB without mentioning the VL Commodore. Holden’s answer to stricter emissions laws during the late 80’s in Australia, the VL sourced Nissan’s single cam RB30, which in turbo form made 201 horsepower, giving it more grunt than the locally manufactured Holden V8 of the day. This made the VL turbo a favourite of both the highway patrol and those members of society who prefer to flaunt the country’s speed limits.
