1969 Mustang EFI conversion


Engine swapping is not a new idea and fitting modern, fuel injected engines in classic muscle cars is becoming a common practice.


This 1969 Ford Mustang owned and built by Emmanuel from Restomod Performance is a perfect example of a well executed EFI conversion.


Replacing the carburetted 302ci, 2V engine is a fuel injected 5L (302ci) Coyote motor from the current model Mustang GT. The Coyote features a set of twin cam, 4V heads with each cam individually controlled by the ECU.

The ECU can advance or retard intake and exhaust cam timing for each cam improving the engine’s power output and fuel economy.


Reliabile, easy and predictable power delivery were high on Emmanuel’s list as the car was intended to be driven on a daily basis.


With this in mind, Emmanuel opted for a full Haltech set-up which was expertly wired in by Justin from ProWire.


The Haltech system consists of of a Haltech Elite 2500 ECU, Coyote Full Terminated Harness, Dual Channel CAN Wideband and a Haltech HPI 8 Igniter.


“Haltech’s full terminated harness really makes the wiring job so much easier,” said Justin from ProWire, “all the connections are there, each plug is clearly labelled, you can just lay the harness over the engine and see where everything goes.”


“With the Elite 2500 we were able to retain all the mod cons offered by the engine,” said Emmanuel, “air conditioning, power steering, cold start, it’s like driving a modern car.”


The car made a lazy 265kW / 355hp at the rear wheels, plenty enough for daily driving and weekend cruising.


“This is not a race car,” explained Emmanuel, “I am not after crazy power, I’m more interested in a linear power delivery that’s useable throughout the rev range.”

One thing is certain, with its classic looks this ’69 Mustang is bound to turn heads wherever it goes and with its modern Coyote engine it’ll be a pleasure to drive too.
