Haltech Heroes: Franz Kuncic’s LS-swapped R33 Skyline

For this installment of Haltech Heroes we travel to Austria, to a local Pro-Drifter Franz Kuncic and his Nissan R33 called “Drift Taxi”.

Franz is no stranger to motorsport, having had a successful karting and open wheel career as a youngster. He was 1993 Austrian Kart Champion and in 1994 he was Runner Up.

In 2001 Franz joined the German Formula König championship, reaching third place in 2002 then champion in 2003. However, it was drifting that was always in his veins.

These days, Franz’s weapon of choice is an R33 GTSt, heavily modified to suit the rigors of pro drifting.

Gone is the factory RB25, replaced by GM’s ever popular LS. The supercharged, 6.2L engine sports fully forged internals and gives Franz the extra power and torque he needs.

“The V8 gives me more low RPM power which means more wheelspin coming out of corners, and that’s very important.”

At 0.8 BAR (11psi) the engine produces in excess of 700hp of easy accessible, useable power. Over 900Nm of torque certainly doesn’t go unnoticed either.

Being a rare Japanese import the car had to be converted from its original right hand drive to left hand drive. Franz used readily available Euro parts to do the conversion.

The steering rack and the gearbox were sourced from a BMW E46. Out back the rear diff is a NISMO GTSt item.

The engine is wired in with a Haltech fully terminated LS engine harness, which hooks it up to the Haltech Elite 2500 ECU.

It has been tuned by Thomas and Roman at ECU Performance who also fitted a custom Drive By Wire throttle. The system also includes a Haltech IQ3 street display, a dual wideband kit and a console-mounted rotary trim module.

Being a mixing pot of Japanese, German, American and Australian engineering, built, tuned and driven by Austrians, it’s no wonder Franz often refers to the car as “Franzenstein’s Monster”.

Franz is currently competing across eight different countries in the Pro class of the Drift Kings International and King of Europe Drift Series. He also recently won a wildcard entry into the Drift Masters GP competition.

“Competing against the best of the best at the Drift Masters was an amazing experience!”
