Return of the Style King: Forrest Wang 2nd at Long Beach

The “Style King” Forrest Wang started his 2018 comeback to Formula Drift in an amazing fashion. Forrest qualified 3rd in his Haltech-powered Nissan Silvia S15 on Friday and battled his way through previous season champions to earn a 2nd place podium.

The Streets of Long Beach, CA is one of the most challenging Formula Drift courses. After a 1 year sabbatical, Wang was unranked and was the first competitor to be judged in qualifying.

After months of building the competition vehicle, hours of testing and car preparation, Wang set the bar high with a wall- to-wall 93 point run right out of the gate.

Wang’s Top 32 battle put him up against Achilles Tire Teammate and Formula Drift Rookie Kazuya Taguchi in the GTR-35 powered by Jerry Yang Racing. Wang ran a very strong lead run filling all of the zones, grazing the walls, while carrying more speed creating a small gap. Wang did his best on the chase run to pressure/mirror Taguchi and advanced to the next bracket.

Top 16 – Forrest Wang vs. Vaughn Gittin Jr

In the Top 16 Wang would battle former Formula Drift Season Champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. Gitten’s team made some chassis adjustments and had been looking fast in his previous battles. The setting change sacrificed the amount of angle on initiation but allowed Wang to maximize on the other 3/4’s of the run. This change proved most helpful on the follow-run allowing Wang to get into the pocket early coming out of outer zone 1 and into outer zone 2. Gittin unexpectedly spun coming out of zone 2 and Wang was awarded the win.

Top 8 – Forrest Wang vs Chris Forsberg

The Great 8 battle was against a multiple season champion Chris Forsberg. The first battles were very close and the judges deemed it was necessary to do it “One More Time” as the crowd chanted “WANG MORE TIME.”

In the OMT battle, Wang continued to execute his strong lead run with massive amounts of angle and smoke. The follow was challenging for both drivers as Wang had a shallow initiation and Forsberg straightened at the final clipping point. Wang moved on to the final 4.

James Deane the 2017 Formula Drift Season Champion suffered mechanical suspension damage in his Top 8 battle preventing his advancement into the Final 4. Wang moved on into the Finals with a bye run. One of the many motivating factors for Wang to re-enter Formula Drift was to do battle with James Deane. Hopefully, #wangvsdeane will occur later this season.

Final – Forrest Wang vs Fredric Aasbo

“Wang definitely won the lead position” – Ryan Lanteigne.
Forrest hit all of the zones perfectly giving Aasbo the best line possible to follow. A small bobble on Aasbo’s follow and dispersion on Wang’s chase run brought about a Final Battle with another “One More Time”

The podium: 1st – Fredric Aasbo, 2nd – Forrest Wang, 3rd – Piotr Wiecek.
