Cleetus McFarland’s Foxbody Mustang McFlurry

VOTE FOR CLEETUS’ MUSTANG TO WIN THE 2023 HALTECH HERO OF THE YEAR HERE

What in tarnation!? Cleetus McFarland, Jackstand Jimmy, and crew have whipped up a new monster to add to the famous Cleetus fleet. If you watch his YouTube channel (and who doesn’t?) you probably already know the car we’re talking about. A crazy twin-turbo Ford Mustang powered by the mighty Godzilla engine, known as “McFlurry”. We got the opportunity to sit down with Cleetus to find out what makes this thing tick.

McFlurry is a 1990 Foxbody with a 7.3L Godzilla motor and twin 7675 Precision turbos. So why go with a Godzilla power plant? Well, Cleetus says it best…

“Everyone loves a Ford engine in a Ford. The Godzilla engine is easy to make fast and it’s Ford on Ford… it’s perfect.”

Drag and drive events have become hugely popular in the last few years, and that’s exactly what the guys had in mind for this Mustang. With McFlurry’s debut appearance at “Sick Week” already locked in, it gave Cleetus just under a month to complete the build.

This small block 7.3L engine coupled with a pair of twin turbos produces a whopping 1200 horsepower on 22 pounds of boost. When Cleetus was younger he always admired tough-looking cars that had crazy turbo setups, so having turbos that stick out of the bonnet was a must.

“How do people know you have turbos if you can’t see them? Why build a car that looks stock if it’s not? Brother, I want everyone to know I have a set of turbos on this thing!”

Three days before the Sick Week event a team from Haltech USA road-tripped down to Florida and hooked Cleetus up with a bunch of Haltech goodies, including a prototype Ford Godzilla engine harness, iC-7 digital dash, CAN keypad, coils, and last but not least the all mighty Nexus R5 VCU to control the whole lot. After spending some quality time with the car and hitting the page-up button a few times, Haltech’s very own Richard Nelson had a sweet tune-up dialed in and ready for action.

Ole Cleeter has plenty of experience with tuning software of all sorts of variety but seems to have a soft spot for the convenience of Haltech’s NSP and Haltech USA’s technical support.

“I really love the fact that I can simply click “help” and then text the code to my guys at Haltech for them to help me instantly. That’s a really cool feature. But my favorite thing would have to be being able to set up to twelve boost curves on the dial switches and being able to pick one depending on the track conditions on the day.”

But what about naming the car McFlurry? Surely McDonald’s has had something to say about that? “I haven’t gotten a cease and desist letter from McDonald’s yet. I thought we’d have it by the end of Sick Week, but I think they’re fans. At this point, this car has more of a right to the name McFlurry than their ice cream machines… It runs better.”

The boys opted for a Bruno Lenco 5-speed transmission with its gaggle of shifters, purely because the name sounded cool, would be perfect for YouTube titles, and well, because Cleetus always wanted one.

Not long after we visited, McFlurry got a bit of a make-over and now sports a new slick Oreo livery that really gives the car a mean look. Hell yeah, brother!

Cleetus, Jackstand Jimmy, and the crew are always pushing boundaries and innovating new things in the automotive world, which has them naturally wanting to test the limits of the Godzilla engine, we can’t wait to see how far they take it!
