Mike and his K24 Ferrari 308 GTBi
Mike Burroughs from Stanceworks is no stranger to Youtube. His internet-breaking, K-Swapped, 308 has been breaking Ferrari purists’ minds on his own channel for some time now. We caught up with Mike to learn more about the philosophy behind the build before his big trip down under to compete in World Time Attack 2023.
NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER
The 1981 Ferrari 308 GTBi originally came with a 2.9L V8 engine so why swap it out for a turbo JDM engine? Because, well… why not?
“Building something with my hands, bringing a thought into real life, bringing a dream in to fruition and just building. It’s all about having something to do, it’s not about the end result for me.”
HONDA POWER
Look away now Ferrari purists… Mike’s chosen engine for the swap is a Honda K24. Stuffed with all the boosts, supplied by a Garrett G42-1200 compact turbo. The top and bottom end are completely worked over and is built to make 1200HP at the crank equal to about 1000HP at the wheels. The transmission is a Quaife sequential 5-speed gearbox.

INSIDE TECH & FEATURES
Inside, the car has seen a complete makeover, in fact, the only original piece is the factory dashboard, keeping the iconic classic Ferrari binnacle which Mike loves for its F40-style feel. Retro-fitted neatly inside the binnacle is an iC-7 display dash that provides Mike with all the important information that he needs to see.

The brains of the Ferrari is a Nexus R5 VCU and controls pretty much everything. A 15-button CAN keypad has been installed in order to activate and control various functions such as fuel and water pumps, fans, start/stop, launch control, rolling anti-lag, turn signals, and lighting.

Ry-Wire is responsible for the car’s wiring harness allowing the Nexus R5 unit to work in unison with a PD16 PDM to cover all the electronics of the build.

The factory leather seats, door cards, and trim all went into the trash can. The original fiberglass door panels were stripped down and laced with Alcantara fabric. The sound-deadening materials were also removed to help with weight reduction and then freshly carpeted over the top.

BRAKES, SUSPENSION & WHEELS
The Ferrari sits on white 18” Rotiform ROC-H wheels accompanied by AP Racing Pro-5000R Radi-cal brakes for stopping power. It also sports custom control arms with H&R Motorsport coilovers.

AERO PACKAGE
RS Future Dynamics is responsible for the full body kit from the huge front splitter, diffuser in the rear, side splitters, and the rear wing which provides a significant amount of downforce aiding the car to hug the asphalt.

Mike partnered up with Son Of Cobra to build a one-of-one custom carbon ducted hood for cooling purposes.

FUTURE PLANS
Time-attack racing is next on Mike’s to-do list however, he doesn’t count on the car being super competitive.
“I want to compete against myself and also compete against what I have built, so I can come back to the drawing board, refine it, improve it and go back out to get faster and faster.”
If you’re in Australia, make sure you get yourself a ticket to World Time Attack Challenge in September, because we’re bringing Mike and his Ferrari over to join the party. The car will be pitted on the Haltech stand, so you’ll be able to get a nice close look at Mike’s handiwork.
