Shawn Bassett and his Full Carbon 240Z

Shawn Bassett, a seasoned racer with a passion for motorcycles, found himself at a crossroads after years of pushing the limits on two wheels. Although he had excelled in Super Moto racing, the allure of four-wheel racing began to beckon, promising a safer yet equally thrilling experience. Pikes Peak had always been a dream for Shawn, even during his motorcycle racing days. This dream was about to take shape in a way he had never imagined.

Acquiring a Datsun 240Z initially intended as a fun track day car, Shawn soon realized that the car’s condition was far from ideal. While its exterior showed promise, beneath the surface lay a significant restoration project. However, Shawn was undeterred, and the project was about to evolve into something remarkable.

With a clear vision in mind and the freedom to build the car of his dreams without external pressures, Shawn embarked on a journey of transformation. He would soon bring new life to the iconic 240Z, ensuring that its classic charm remained intact.

Under the hood, Shawn’s creation boasts a 5.3L L33 aluminum motor from a Chevy Silverado, generating a remarkable 850 horsepower. The engine bay, while tight, is a well-thought-out space featuring a Garrett G42 1200 compact turbo and Vibrant charge piping. Maintenance is simplified thanks to the tube chassis setup.

Inside the car, a custom-made racing paddle shift button enclosure and steering wheel take centre stage. The Haltech IC7 Dash provides essential data for the race, while additional auxiliary gauges are integrated into the OEM-shaped Dash, preserving some of the 240Z’s iconic elements.

The heart of Shawn’s project is the Haltech R5 ECU, seamlessly coordinating all systems in the car. Traction control and a full PDM setup simplify the car’s setup without the need for multiple programs. Troubleshooting is a breeze with expert support just a few clicks away.

Shawn’s workshop, known as Attacking the Clock Racing, specialises in time attack and road race cars. Their focus is on building race cars that not only deliver top-notch performance but also boast an eye-catching appearance. Shawn and his team take pride in their unique style, setting them apart in the racing community. As they continue to push the limits of their projects, they race not only against the clock on the track but also against the clock in their shop, striving for perfection in their craft.
